The ancient Greek philosophy of Stoicism is what I think J.R. Tolkien was saying are his Elves are like. Stoic. Resilient. Persevering. Long suffering. Calm. Impartial. Virtuous. Living in accordance with Nature. Focusing on what you can control. Elves are long-suffering because they are immortal and they see many changes happen, good and bad, and they see mortals die and fade away and the affairs of men are often to be avoided, for the quarrels and conflicts of humans are toxic to a Elf’s sense of peace, well-being, and sense of virtue. It was only when the darkness threatens to overwhelm the light do they fight against Orcs and form alliances with humans. This is not elitism but purity and right action and avoiding as much as possible to meddle and interfere with natural processes and organic order. To accept apparent change amidst their own constancy and immortality and changelessness, and to see and know the tragedy of mortality and of humans apparent self destruction. Yet Elves form alliances with humans at times and friendships can and do form amongst different species and peaceful co-existence is maintained. Like all things with Elves, keeping a level head and living in accordance with nature is key and keeping everything balanced and even on the scales of justice.
But this does not mean without emotion or feelings, only that using your free will to use your reason to impartially will the good. Elves are calm and measured and deliberate in all things and do not act on the basis of rash emotion or morally corrupt motives. or at least that is the hope and Tolkien tries to show us as best as he can even as some Elves do seem to fall victim to pride, greed, etc. It was said Orcs used to be Elves who turned and so it is a cautionary tale but Elven logic and reason can be trusted in many cases and many Elves are spiritually evolved or at least the Light ones are or try to be. No one is beyond temptation and deception, no matter the species and thus the scales of justice always need to be balanced and even and this is what Elven Stoicism can do.
